Abstract In this study, three intelligent modeling approaches, including Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Artificial Neural Network–Multilayer Perceptron, and Artificial Neural Network–Radial Basis Function, were employed to simulate 14 water quality parameters, in the Halil River over a long-term monthly dataset spanning 52 years. Streamflow discharge was used as an input variable in some models. The performance of the developed models was evaluated using statistical indicators including the coefficient of determination (R²), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and Willmott’s index of agreement (d). The results indicated that although all three artificial intelligence models demonstrated high capability in simulating the investigated water quality parameters, the ANFIS model outperformed the other models in most cases. Specifically, for SAR, values of R² = 0.99 and RMSE = 1.04 were obtained; for %Na, R² = 0.99 and RMSE = 3.02; and for SO₄, R² = 0.93 and RMSE = 0.61. Among the input scenarios, model (b), which incorporates five easily measurable parameters, is recommended as a practical and efficient model, as it reduced RMSE by approximately 65% compared to model (a) (based solely on discharge). The findings of this study demonstrate that intelligent machine learning techniques can be effectively used to estimate water quality parameters in cases where direct measurements are unavailable, based on other measured variables, thereby reducing laboratory analysis costs.

Abstract In the present study, biochar derived from cypress cones was surface modified using chitosan, a biopolymer rich in amino functional groups, in order to enhance its performance for the removal of nickel (II) ions from aqueous solutions. To investigate the possible mechanisms involved in nickel removal, both raw biochar and chitosan modified biochar were characterized using BET, FTIR, and FE SEM analyses. BET results showed that chitosan coating increased the specific surface area of biochar from 13.2 to 5.75 m²/g and reduced the average pore diameter from 10.97 to 6.26 nm. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the appearance of new peaks at 1620 cm⁻¹ (amide C=O group) and 3430 cm⁻¹ (N–H stretching vibration), verifying the successful incorporation of amino and amide groups onto the adsorbent surface. Nickel removal was optimized using response surface methodology based on a Box–Behnken design with four variables: initial nickel concentration, pH, adsorbent dose, and contact time. The reduced cubic model, with a high coefficient of determination (0.98), exhibited excellent agreement with the experimental data for both adsorbents. Under laboratory conditions, the chitosan modified biochar achieved a nickel removal efficiency of 55%, whereas the raw biochar showed only 51% removal. This enhancement is attributed to the synergistic contribution of physical adsorption within the improved porous network, surface complexation with amino/amide functional groups, and ion-exchange interactions. The findings of this study indicate that although chitosan modification of cypress cone biochar leads to a noticeable improvement in nickel adsorption capacity, further investigations are required in real industrial wastewater.

Abstract Landfill management in arid Iran requires precise site selection due to environmental fragility and agricultural dependence. Chatroud's current landfill has become a pollution hub, provoking social conflicts by neglecting environmental criteria. This study provides an operational framework differentiating and integrating constraint and suitability criteria from national guidelines, tailored to local conditions. Using MCDM, weighted overlaying, and viewshed analysis, unsuitable areas were first excluded based on ecological-social constraints (e.g., buffers for water resources and settlements). Remaining lands were then weighted and evaluated by the suitability degree of other key criteria. Among five candidate sites, Site 2 is optimal due to safe aquifer distance, appropriate city distance, reduced future social conflicts (from wind alignment dispersing pollutants away from settlements, and highly limited viewshed from topographic confinement). The key lesson is implementing "closure and rehabilitation" of the current site while establishing the new site with comprehensive monitoring and sustainable social participation to manage future conflicts. Differentiating constraints from suitability ensures technical compliance with national guidelines and enables project implementation success and local acceptance—generalizable to other arid regions of Iran.

Abstract Tehran Province has experienced increasing pressure on its environmental resources and infrastructure in recent decades due to the concentration of economic activities and intensive migration flows. These developments have intensified spatial inequalities in access to environmental services among the counties of the province. Therefore, spatial analysis of the environmental conditions of the counties is essential for identifying these inequalities. In this study, statistical data on 12 variables grouped into three environmental indicators were collected and weighted using the Shannon Entropy method. Subsequently, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was employed to integrate the variables and rank the counties. The counties were then classified into four categories—sustainable, semi-sustainable, vulnerable, and critical—using an absolute classification approach. The results revealed that none of the counties achieved a sustainable status, while only Firuzkuh and Shemiranat were classified as semi-sustainable. In contrast, the counties of Pishva, Tehran, Pardis, Robat Karim, Damavand, and Varamin were identified as vulnerable, whereas Qods, Baharestan, Eslamshahr, Ray, Malard, Qarchak, Shahriar, and Pakdasht were classified as critical. These findings indicate an uneven distribution of environmental livability-related facilities and services across the province and reveal a pronounced spatial disparity between the northern counties and those located in the southern, western, and southwestern parts of Tehran Province. Overall, the results demonstrate that environmental livability in Tehran Province follows an imbalanced spatial distribution pattern. Accordingly, the strategies proposed in this study are aimed at reducing spatial inequalities and promoting progress toward sustainable development across the province.

Effect of Coffee Waste on the Rheological Properties and Compressive Strength of SCC Concrete

Abstract The increasing consumption of coffee in recent years has led to a significant rise in the volume of its waste, highlighting the need to investigate its engineering applicability in construction materials. In this study, coffee waste was added to SCC concrete at volumetric replacement levels of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% of fine aggregates to evaluate its effects on rheological behavior and compressive strength at various curing ages. The mix design was prepared according to EFNARC guidelines, and slump flow, T50, V funnel, J ring, L box, U box, and compressive strength tests were conducted at 7, 28, and 90 days. The results showed that increasing coffee waste reduced the slump flow from 720 mm in the control mix to 560 mm in the C 10% mix, corresponding to a 22.2% decrease. The T50 time increased from 2.8 to 5.2 seconds (an 85.7% rise). The V funnel time increased by up to 130%, and the U box height difference increased by up to 83%. The L box height ratio decreased by approximately 70% in the C 10% mix. However, using 2.5% coffee waste still kept the SCC concrete mix within the acceptable EFNARC limits. The compressive strength results further indicated that coffee waste reduces strength, delays setting, and promotes the formation of weak zones in the concrete. Specifically, replacement levels of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10% reduced compressive strength by approximately 9%, 21%, 36%, and 55%, respectively.

Abstract The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of environmental education in the form of a zero waste plan on improving environmental awareness, attitudes, and behaviors of elementary school students, as well as the role of family participation in sustaining these behavioral changes. This study was conducted with a quasi-experimental approach and in a real school setting, on a group of male and female students in the second and third grades of elementary school in Ardakan city.Data were collected through three main sources, including direct observation of behavior, structured surveys, and analysis of documents and student works, and analyzed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. In order to increase the validity of the findings, the approach of data triangulation and standardization of indicators in the form of comparable scales was used. The research findings showed that implementing the zero waste plan significantly increased awareness and improved students' environmental attitudes, and these changes were also significantly reflected in the level of behavior.Reducing the consumption of single-use plastics, increasing the use of reusable tools, and promoting participation in waste separation were among the most important behavioral changes observed. The results also showed that the formation of environmental support groups in schools played an important role in strengthening social capital and sustaining environmental behaviors. Another important finding of the research was the decisive role of families in establishing and maintaining students' environmental behaviors, such that the alignment of school education and family behaviors has reduced the gap between awareness and action.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate and compare heavy metal contamination in soils of Chadegan County (Isfahan Province) and Aligudarz County (Lorestan Province), both located within the Sanandaj-Sirjan structural zone. A total of 128 soil samples from Chadegan and 100 from Aligudarz were collected at 30 cm depth and analyzed by ICP-MS. Geochemical indices including the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), contamination factor (Cf), pollution load index (PLI), and enrichment factor (EF) were calculated using world average shale as background reference. Statistical analyses comprised Pearson correlation, cluster analysis, and spatial interpolation by ordinary kriging in ArcGIS. Results indicate that in Chadegan, PLI values for all elements remain below one, reflecting low to moderate contamination levels. In contrast, Aligudarz shows significant contamination in five elements: nickel (PLI=6.04), chromium (PLI=4.45), scandium (PLI=4.37), cobalt (PLI=3.33), and lead (PLI=2.36). Chromium recorded the highest concentrations in both areas (Chadegan: 184 ppm; Aligudarz: 239 ppm). The exceptionally high zinc enrichment factor in Aligudarz (EF=60.9) is attributed to the Golzard lead-zinc mine. The primary sources of contamination in Aligudarz are mining activities and hydrothermal alteration of metamorphic rocks, while in Chadegan the main anthropogenic source is a stone-crusher plant operating without an adequate filtration system. Continuous environmental monitoring and installation of pollution control equipment are recommended for both areas

Abstract Acid mine drainage is one of the most significant environmental consequences of mining activities and the accumulation of sulfide-bearing mine tailings. Owing to its high acidity and elevated concentrations of heavy metals, it poses a serious threat to water resources and surrounding ecosystems. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of an electrochemical process for the removal and recovery of copper from acid mine drainage generated at the Sungun Copper Mine, while simultaneously reducing the concentrations of other metallic contaminants. Experiments were conducted in a cubic Plexiglas reactor with a working volume of 1,100 mL using direct current. The actual acid mine drainage sample contained 134 mg/L of copper and 129 mg/L of aluminum. In the initial stage, the temperature, electrode spacing, reaction time, and applied voltage were maintained at 25 °C, 1 cm, 20 min, and 2.5 V, respectively. Under these conditions, a zinc anode and copper cathode were identified as the most effective electrode configuration. The dominant removal mechanisms included copper electrodeposition on the cathode surface, formation and precipitation of metal hydroxides, sweep flocculation, and flotation of a portion of the contaminants due to hydrogen evolution. Solvent extraction was also investigated in combination with the electrochemical process to improve the purity of the recovered copper. The results demonstrated that integrating these processes could provide an effective approach for copper recovery, reducing sludge production and chemical consumption, and controlling the pollutant load of acid mine drainage from copper mining operations.

Abstract Urban prosperity, as one of the key concepts in the modern literature of urban planning and sustainable development, represents the ability of a city to achieve a balance between various economic, social, environmental and physical dimensions. Today, rapid population growth, concentration of economic activities and increasing demand for urban services have caused cities to face challenges in the field of inequality, pollution, weak infrastructure and reduced quality of life. In such circumstances, assessing the level of urban prosperity and identifying the factors affecting it is a fundamental necessity for smart urban management and future-oriented decision-making.
The city of Bojnourd, the capital of North Khorasan Province, has undergone extensive changes in physical and demographic dimensions in recent years, such that numerous challenges have prevented it from achieving prosperity. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate and evaluate the level of prosperity of Bojnourd and determine the importance of each of its five dimensions with special emphasis on the environmental sustainability dimension.
The present study is an applied study conducted using a descriptive-analytical method. The required information was compiled through a study of documentary sources and a researcher-made questionnaire based on the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in the five main dimensions of prosperity (productivity, urban infrastructure, quality of life, social justice and inclusion, and environmental sustainability). The statistical population is university professors, managers, and specialists in Bojnourd city who were selected purposefully and using the snowball method. SPSS software and the Friedman test were used to analyze the data to rank the effective components. The results showed that urban infrastructure, with an average rating of 4.57, has the greatest impact on the prosperity of the city. The dimensions of environmental and social justice, quality of life, and productivity are in the next ranks, respectively.

Abstract Noise pollution is one of the environmental problems that has gained wider dimensions with the development of technology and industry and has harmful effects on the health of citizens. Urban traffic contributes significantly to noise pollution in metropolitan cities. Creating green spaces is known as an effective solution for reducing noise pollution. In this study, the sound level was measured on the Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani Highway in Mashhad and, while comparing it with environmental standards, a noise zoning map was prepared using the Ordinary Kriging interpolation method and Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW). To prepare the noise pollution zoning map, in addition to the 40 highway stations, 27 other stations around the highway were determined and the LAeq index was measured and the values were recorded. In the kriging method, the RMSE value is 6.2 and less than the RMSE value of 8.2 in the inverse weighting method, so the efficiency of the inverse weighting method is less than the kriging method. In another part of the research, the effect of different types of vehicles on noise pollution was examined through statistical tests. There is a positive correlation between the value of noise indices and the number of vehicles. The role of urban green space use in reducing and absorbing noise pollution was examined through statistical analysis using SPSS software. The results showed that the effects of green space on reducing pollution are positive and the extent of this effect varies depending on the differences in the characteristics of green space.

Abstract Due to the increasing importance of providing security services and measures to prevent and deal with fire incidents and crisis management in cities, fire stations are very important. Undoubtedly, the timely service of fire stations, more than anything else, along with the need to establish them in suitable places in urban environments, requires having the necessary capabilities and equipment to respond to the needs of citizens. Greater Tehran, with a population of more than eight million people, is the largest city in the country, due to the parallel expansion, and also the increase in population, has increased the grounds of fire in the city. The current research is important because its audience is all managers, and fire chiefs and it can be used to investigate management systems and accident command. The research method in this research is the hierarchical analysis process, where the indicators are compared and scored one by one, and the priority between them is determined. Based on the analysis conducted in this research, the operational forces stationed in the fire stations and operational vehicles are not proportional to the capacity of the region, and the firefighting equipment of these stations will not be sufficient for the region during the fires after the earthquake, and this is one of the negative points of the study area that during the earthquake Fire control is almost impossible and we will face a serious crisis.

Abstract Urban resilience refers to the capacity of an urban system, over both temporal and spatial scales, to maintain or rapidly return to desired past functionalities in the face of disruptions or changes. Climate change essentially refers to the warming of the Earth's surface caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Urban ecological resilience refers to the capacity of ecological systems within cities to absorb disturbances and maintain necessary and intrinsic feedbacks, processes, and structures. Climate resilience is a subset of urban ecological resilience, denoting a city's potential to address problems arising from sudden weather phenomena and hazards influenced by climate change. Mitigating climate change focuses on five key factors: urban form, construction, artificial environment, urban infrastructure, transportation, and carbon production. Our research aims to contribute to current knowledge and deeper understanding and better identification of climate change and its effects on human life and urban climate quality, utilizing the features of urban green infrastructure, particularly in Tabriz city. We intend to report the effects of climate change and examine the components of resilience using previous studies by evaluating climatic elements. In this study, we employ the Park Cooling Effects method on Land Surface Temperature (LST) using urban green infrastructure. As an example, we sampled from the Bagh-e-Fajr in Tabriz, located in the city center. We have concluded that the presence of green spaces and urban green infrastructure plays a significant role in climate resilience and reducing land surface temperature.

Abstract The most important objective of this paper is to provide an appropriate model for selecting best waste-to-energy technology for both private and public sector managers and investors. Urban waste management combined with energy recovery can be the most suitable solution not only for preserving environment but also for producing and supplying energy to urban and rural communities. Determining the most appropriate waste-to-energy technology is a challenging and complex process, requiring consideration of a wide range of diverse criteria. For this purpose, this study tries to apply two of the most widely used Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) methods, TOPSIS and VIKOR. Anaerobic digestion (AD), incineration, and pyrolysis were chosen as the main options for waste-to-energy conversion technologies. These options were evaluated based on three main criteria: environmental, technical, and economic, each of which included various sub-criteria. The results of pairwise comparisons indicate that among main criteria, environmental criterion holds the highest score and importance, followed by the economic and technical criteria, respectively. To ensure reliability, the options were ranked using three different MCDM models methods: Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), VIKOR, and TOPSIS. The overall results of the decision-making models show that incineration is the best waste-to-energy technology, followed by anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis in respective order.

Abstract Air pollution is recognized as one of the fundamental challenges in the field of environmental engineering. This study examines the impact of vehicle tires on air pollution and explores methods to reduce it. A significant portion of the energy generated by the vehicle engine is lost through tire rolling resistance. Consequently, reducing tire rolling resistance leads to decreased fuel consumption and, consequently, reduced air pollution. Modifying the formulation of tire tread compounds can be an effective approach to reducing tire rolling resistance. One proposed method for modifying the formulation is the addition of nanoparticles as fillers. In this research, the impact of adding varying amounts of nanosilica to the tire tread compound formulation, which is the main factor contributing to vehicular energy dissipation, has been investigated. The results indicate that the addition of nanosilica increases tire rolling resistance. Furthermore, the influence of tire thickness on its lifespan and rolling resistance has been examined, demonstrating an increase in rolling resistance over time. Additionally, necessary changes in the production process conditions and their impact on the mechanical properties and performance of the produced materials have also been investigated. Rheological analysis reveals that the addition of nanosilica leads to increased viscosity. Moreover, the examination of mechanical properties shows an increase in the modulus values of both 100% and 300% materials with the addition of nanosilica.

Abstract Rapid urbanization has increased construction and demolition waste (CDW), exacerbating issues around CDW collection, transportation, and disposal in cities lacking efficient management programs. This study applies life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental performance of current CDW management in Tehran and identify critical aspects for improvement. Using Impact 2002+, LCA was conducted for the base case (19.4% recycling), and two alternative scenarios combining landfilling, source separation, sorting, and varying percentages of CDW recycling. The life cycle inventory used primary data from field studies and secondary data from ecoinvent 3.7 and literature. Results demonstrate recycling benefits through avoided impacts from non-renewable energy, global warming, non-carcinogens, and respiratory inorganics and organics versus landfilling. Hence, findings can motivate improved CDW management based on environmental and technical factors, not just economic and political ones. Producers may be compelled to reduce waste sources, while recyclers and stakeholders are encouraged to continuously enhance C&D waste systems across Iran. Additionally, this study provides data to support other LCAs on CDW. Overall, applying LCA reveals critical ways to advance CDW management in Tehran toward a more sustainable system.
